On September 8, 2012 poet Patricia Smith performed at City of Asylum/Pittsburgh‘s Jazz Poetry Concert. Before her reading, Smith was interviewed by Tameka Cage-Conley, a Pittsburgh-based playwright, poet, and writer. In this interview excerpt, Smith discusses performance, education, and poets’ responsibility to society. Read the full interview with Patricia Smith here.

Patricia Smith was one of five readers at this year’s Jazz Poetry Concert, hosted by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh. She has published six poetry collections, including Blood Dazzler a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award. She has served as a faculty member for Cave Canem and teaches at City University of New York/College of Staten Island and the University of Southern Maine.
