On Tuesday night, Malaysian cartoonist Zulkifli Anwar Ulhaque (also known as Zunar) was arrested for sedition. The arrest followed a tweet criticizing a court ruling upholding a sodomy charge against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. Zunar has been criticizing the case against Ibrahim, which began in 1998, for several years, and several of his cartoons address the allegations that the currently Malaysian government has a vested interest in imprisoning the popular opposition leader. Zunar’s tweet read “Those in the black robes were proud when passing sentence. The rewards from political masters must be lucrative.” Zunar was also arrested and charged with sedition in 2010, hours before the release of his book Cartoon-O-Phobia.

On Friday morning, multiple sources reported that Zunar has been released on bail but will remain under police surveillance.

Zunar’s work has previously appeared in Sampsonia Way and on Cartoon Movement. See more of his work here.
