The Writer’s Block is an ongoing video series of interviews with visiting writers at City of Asylum/Pittsburgh. In these Q&A’s, conducted on Sampsonia Way, writers sit down with us to discuss literature, their craft, and career. View all previous interviews here.

In December 2012, writer Hilary Masters was interviewed for Sampsonia Way. Masters, a resident of the Mexican War Streets neighborhood, has been writing since childhood and describes his work as “different kinds of abandonment, physical, spiritual and moral.” His first novel, The Common Pasture, was published in 1967, and since then he has published nine more novels, short stories, essays, and a 1983 memoir, Last Stands: Notes from Memory.
