On June 21, Nikky Finney came to Pittsburgh as faculty member for Cave Canem, an organization that is committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of African American poets. City of Asylum/Pittsburgh co-hosted a reading with Cave Canem which featured Finney as well as poets Thomas Sayers Ellis, Terrance Hayes, and Angela Jackson.

Nikky Finney received the National Book Award in Poetry for her collection Head Off & Split. She has also written The World is Round, winner of the 2004 Benjamin Franklin Award for Poetry, and Rice. Currently Finney is a professor of creative writing at the University of Kentucky.
