On January 25 at 7 PM, City of Asylum/Pittsburgh will host a reading featuring two visiting writers from the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program: Fabienne Kanor and Marvin Victor.
Both writers have French-speaking Caribbean roots; the reading will be conducted in English and a little French.
Kanor plans to read two sections from her second novel Humus, which focuses on the memories of women in the West Indies slave trade. Victor will read an excerpt from his latest novel and plans for a discussion about literature as a whole–not just literature from the Caribbean.
This reading promises to be a poly-cultural experience–don’t miss it.

Born in France of Martinican descent, FABIENNE KANOR is a novelist and a filmmaker. She is the author of four novels, D’Eaux douces (2004), Humus (2006), Les Chiens ne font pas des chats (Gallimard, 2008) and Anticorps (Gallimard, 2010), as well as a children’s novel Le Jour où la mer a disparu (2008). She received the Fetkann Award for her novel D’Eaux Douces and the RFO Literary Award for Humus. She has also made two short films and several documentaries, including C’est qui l’homme?, winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Angers Film Festival in 2008. She has worked as a reporter at France 3, Radio Nova (Paris), and International French Radio RFI. In 2010, she was awarded Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.
MARVIN VICTOR is a fiction writer and filmmaker from Haiti. He has worked on a number of documentaries, shorts and feature-length films, including the 2009 adaptation of Kathy Acker’s novel Kathy Goes To Haiti, and taught creative writing courses for Fondation Culture Création. In 2011 he published the novel Corps mêlés (Gallimard, Paris), and his short fiction was included in the collection Haiti Noir (Akashic Books, ed. Edwidge Danticat). His articles have appeared in the magazine Conjonction. He is the recipient of the 2008 Young Francophone Writers Award and the 2011 Grand Prix du Roman de la Société des Gens de Lettres.
