WWB Features Writing Exile in September Issue

Words without Borders, the online magazine for international literature, announces the release of an issue dedicated to writing from and about exile.

This September, Words without Borders presents writing about and from exile. Writers forced to flee their homelands explore the nuances of departure and absence, struggling to maintain their bonds with their native cultures while adjusting to their adopted homes.

Susan Harris, Words without Borders editorial director, said of the issue, “Whether fleeing political persecution or seeking better lives, the writers in this issue reveal the emotional and physical costs of deracination and the complexity of resettling.”

Venezuelan writer Israel Centeno, who is currently in residence at the Cities of Asylum center in Pittsburgh, sends a disgraced detective deep into the woods in his modern twist on a fairy tale; London-based author and the first-ever BBC Writer-in-Residence Hamid Ismailov follows an Uzbek émigré in Moscow who finds himself host to an unwanted guest; and the critic M. Lynx Qualey, the voice behind the Web site Arabic Literature (in English), discusses the eternal theme of exile in Arabic literature.

The issue also features writing by Osama Alomar (Syria), Mohamed Ali Diriye (Somalia), Osama Esber (Syria), Khayrullo Fayz (Uzbekistan), Koulsy Lamko (Chad), Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo (Cuba), and Mahmoud Saeed (Iraq), and an interview with three exiled Middle Eastern women writers in Paris conducted by Olivia Snaije.

The issue also includes work from visual artists in exile Owen Maseko (Zimbabwe), Zunar (Malaysia), Kianoush Ramezani (Iran), Chaw Ei Thein (Burma), Kardash Onnig (Armenia), Khaled Barakeh (Syria), Arahmaiani Feisal (Indonesia), and Issa Nyaphaga (Cameroon) as part of a collaboration with FreeDimensional.

We’re also delighted to introduce a selection of new Nepali writing by Amar Nyaupane, Nayan Raj Pandey, and Sulochana Manandhar, introduced by Manjushree Thapa.
