“Our stories have always been told by other people. But marginalized people are now telling their own stories,” said Black Lives Matter activist Deray McKesson during the 2015 protest movement in Ferguson, Missouri following the police shooting of Michael Brown.

In commemoration of Black History Month, SampsoniaWay.org is sharing the words of some of the African American poets and writers who have told their own stories to us over the years of our publication. In the past, we have interviewed Amiri Baraka, Angela Jackson, Yusef Komunyakaa, Claudia Rankine, and many others. Let their stories serve as a reminder, this month and every month of the year, to build a society where freedom and justice is realized for Black people, and by extension, all.
